CHILDREN got the chance to experience shadow art as part of a First World War-themed theatre performance.

The Kando Youth Theatre presented their performance in the Witham Music Hall, in Barnard Castle, on Saturday where the cast, aged between ten and 15, used the shadows to transform them into “flesh and blood” characters alongside period music.

The performance began with a sunny afternoon in the park with children playing and young couples walking arm-in-arm but the peaceful scene was shattered by the arrival of the recruiting sergeant.

Scenes followed of young men marching through streets, a family enjoying a picnic in a field of poppies oblivious to the battle raging behind them.

Young children waved flags as tanks pass by and nurses tore sheets for bandages before a bombardment.

They had very little rehearsal time, but everyone stepped up to the mark and delivered strong performances.

“Quite remarkable from such a young cast ranging in age from ten to 15 years – We are so proud of them.”

The Christmas truce was also re-enacted.

Kelvin Moore, artistic director of Kando Arts, a not-for-profit company, said: “The young people taking part were incredible.”

“They had very little rehearsal time, but everyone stepped up to the mark and delivered strong performances.”

The group is always looking for new members and no acting experience required.
